What Do I Bring to My Wedding Dress Fitting?

Anything to do with a wedding can be both exciting and stressful. This is true also for your wedding gown fittings and the alterations that may need to be done. Here are a few tips to help this process go smoothly.

· Bring/wear the underclothing you will wear with the dress. The correct underclothes will compliment the dress and your figure. Bring the bra, underwear, slimmer, slip, etc. with you for each of your fittings.

· Bring the shoes and accessories you will wear for your wedding day. Your shoes will help your seamstress get the correct length for the hem of your gown. If you don’t have the shoes for your fitting (maybe you ordered online and they haven’t arrived), bring heels that are the same height as the ones you will be wearing. If you are wearing heels for the ceremony and flats for the reception, discuss this with your seamstress.

Whether or not you will be wearing a veil, plus the length and style, will also play a part in your fittings and alterations.

· Depending on the alterations you are having done, you may need to have two or more fittings to get it just right. Don’t panic if the dress doesn’t fit exactly right the first fitting. Especially if you are having the gown altered more than two sizes. Remember it is always easier to bring in a dress rather than make it larger. However, if the dress you bought is more than two sizes too big, the whole dress -including bust lines, bodice back, shoulders, and hips may need to be scaled down for the dress to fit correctly.

· Speak up! Your seamstress is there to help you feel beautiful and comfortable in your gown and with the alterations being done. Be honest and let her know if you are not comfortable with her suggestions. If there are any other things you would like changed about the dress, don’t be afraid to tell her what you want. If possible, bring your mom or MOH to give feedback and help you remember everything you hoped for.

· Remember that altering a wedding gown takes time. Allow at least 6-8 weeks for alterations depending on the extent of what you are having done.

· The more things you change about your dress, the more expensive the alterations will be. Beading, lace appliques, layers, and fabric types, all play a role in the expense of the alterations. The more elements that need to be removed and/or replaced, the longer it takes for the alterations. Other elements like sleeves or straps, changing the neckline, creating a bustle, etc. can also add up.

· Be mindful of your body during this time. Sometimes the stress of wedding preparations and possibly eating out with your fiancé or friends more often can cause changes in your weight. If your dress was very tight to start with, being aware of what you eat from the time of your first fitting until your wedding day will help you not have to make any last-minute changes.

And remember weddings will always be exciting and …maybe still a little stressful ….but with these tips, at least the part with your wedding gown fittings will go as smoothly as possible.
